Human Rights Council (2020-2022)

The Republic of Moldova has decided to present its candidature to the Human Rights Council for the term 2020-2022, at the elections to be held in 2019.

The Republic of Moldova is strongly committed to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national, regional and international levels, in accordance with the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and relevant international human rights instruments.

The Republic of Moldova engages actively and regularly with the Human Rights Council and other human rights mechanisms and seeks to fully contribute to advancing the human rights cause worldwide, as was pursued throughout its first mandate during 2010-2013.

Since 2013, Republic of Moldova consistently promotes the Council resolution on the question of the death penalty, as a core group initiator of the text. In June 2014 the resolution was adopted with a clear majority and 71 co-sponsorships, as a result of the advocacy and engagement process with other delegations. The resolution now places this issue on the agenda of the Human Rights Council, enabling a long-term substantive debate, with the purpose of advancing the cause of abolition. Our country had meaningful contributions to other resolutions concerning national policies and human rights; combating trafficking in human beings, especially women and children; rights of the child etc.

The Republic of Moldova is a State party to nearly all core international human rights treaties and their optional protocols. As a member of the Council of Europe, the Republic of Moldova has steadily contributed towards further increasing synergies and enhancing mainstreaming of human rights among international and regional mechanisms. The Republic of Moldova is actively cooperating with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and his Office, which is also operating in the country.
